Cold brew coffee may seem like something you can only get at Starbucks or other coffee shops. However, the process of making cold brew coffee is not as hard as you may think. Believe it or not, you can easily make it in a French press that you already have at home! Read on to find out how.
Get Everything You Need
The first step is to prepare everything you need. This includes coffee beans, coffee grinder, filtered water, a French press, and a spoon. These are everything that you will need to make cold brew coffee at home. If you are a frequent coffee drinker, you should already have these things ready in your kitchen!
Measure Your Coffee
Once you have everything you need within reach, you can go ahead and measure out your coffee. You will have to use more coffee than you normally would for a hot brew. Simply double the amount of coffee you typically use to brew hot coffee in your French press. Go for a ratio of seven parts water to one part coffee. Bear in mind that you will need to know the size of your French press in order to be one-hundred percent accurate. If you see that the coffee brewed using seven-to-one ratio is too weak for you, you can let it steep for longer. However, if it is too strong for your taste, you can cut down your ratio.
Grind Your Coffee
With a grinder, grind your coffee until it is a coarse ground. You can go for a medium ground if you want. Remember, the finer the ground is, the stronger the coffee is going to be.
Add Coffee and Water into Your French Press
Now, add your coffee to the bottom of your French press, then pour in the water. Filtered water is the best for this method, but cold or room temperature water can work as well.
Mix Them Together
Stir the coffee into the water with a spoon. Make sure that every ground is in contact with the water so that it can be brewed properly. Gently and slowly stir the coffee and water until they are mixed together.
Let the Drink Steep
After you are done mixing the coffee and water, all you need to do now is let it steep for twelve hours. If you leave your coffee on the counter and let it steep at room temperature, you may be able to shorten the brewing time. However, if you have to be away for longer than twelve hours, then you are better off brewing it in the refrigerator.
Press the Plunger
After twelve hours, slowly press the plunger of your French press down. For the best results, try to go for a full thirty-second plunge. Also, it is recommended that you pour the coffee over a paper filter into a cup. This way, any loose grounds can be caught.
Finally, you can enjoy your homemade cold brew coffee! You can drink it as is or add some cream, milk, or sugar. Either way, this cold drink will be a treat on a hot summer day! As you can see, the process is very simple and can be done by anyone – even those without any brewing experience.
