A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Cold Brew Coffee in a French Press

Cold brew coffee may seem like something you can only get from an upscale coffee shop or through one of our Nitro brew coffee cans. However, what most people don’t know is that they can make cold brew coffee at home using a french press or through a keg.

The process of making cold brew coffee is not as hard as you may think. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how this works. You can easily make it in a French press that you already have at home! The only thing you need to understand is the right process, and for that, we have you covered. Read on below!

How To Make the Perfect French Press Cold Brew at Home

The process is simple, but the secret lies within the way you do it.

Get Everything You Need

The first step is to prepare everything you need. Here is a list of all the necessary stuff you’re going to need to make the perfect cold brew at home.

  • Coffee beans (use premium for best taste)
  • Coffee grinder (any household grinder will work)
  • Filtered cold water (start with ½ cup or for a bigger brew, at least 2 cups of water)
  • French press
  • Spoon

These are the core ingredients of a good cold brew coffee. If you are a frequent coffee drinker, you should already have these things available in your kitchen!

Measure Your Coffee

Once you have everything you need within reach, you can go ahead and measure out your coffee. You will have to use more coffee than you normally would for a hot brew.

To do this, simply double the amount of coffee you typically use to brew hot coffee in your French press. Go for a ratio of seven parts of water to one part of the coffee. Bear in mind that you will need to know the size of your French press in order to be one-hundred percent accurate.

If you see that the coffee brewed using a seven-to-one ratio is too weak for you, you can let it steep for longer. However, if it is too strong for your taste, you can cut down your ratio.

Grind Your Coffee

With a grinder, grind your coffee until it is a coarse ground. You can go for a medium ground if you want. Remember, the finer the ground coffee is, the stronger the taste is going to be.

Add Coffee and Water into Your French Press

Now, add your coffee to the bottom of your French press, then pour in the water. Filtered water is the best for this method, but cold or room temperature water can work as well.

Mix Them Together

Stir the coffee into the water with a spoon. Make sure that every ground is in contact with the water so that it can be brewed properly. Gently and slowly stir the coffee and water until they are mixed together.

Let the Drink Steep

After you are done mixing the coffee and water, all you need to do now is let it steep for 12 hours for the perfect cold brew concentrate. If you leave your coffee on the counter and let it steep at room temperature, you may be able to shorten the brewing time. However, if you have to be away for longer than twelve hours, then you are better off brewing it in the refrigerator.

Press the Plunger

After twelve hours, slowly press the plunger of your French press down to strain the coffee concentrate. For the best results, try to go for a full thirty-second plunge. Also, it is recommended that you pour the coffee over a paper coffee filter into a cup. This way, any loose grounds can be caught.

What is Nitro Brew Coffee?

Nitro brew coffee is simply cold brew coffee infused with ‘Nitrogen’. It has a texture similar to a soda fountain and feels a lot like a Guinness when you sip on it. The trend of nitro-coffee only started a few years ago, but it has quickly picked up the pace. A lot of people now prefer drinking this version of their daily regular fix than a regular hot brew coffee.

The reason is simple, the texture is great, it tastes a lot better, and its healthier for you.

Most Nitro brew coffee is steeped for 12 hours for the best test, but at 7 Cold Brew, we like to take it a step further by steeping the coffee 21 hours, just short of 24 hours. This is why our can of nitro brew coffee tastes a lot better than anything else you can get your hands on.

Finally, you can enjoy your homemade cold brew coffee! You can drink it as is or add some cream, milk, or sugar. Either way, this iced coffee will be a treat on a hot summer day! As you can see, the process is very simple and can be done by anyone – even those without any brewing experience.
